Today we celebrate the profound mystery of God, the Blessed Trinity – God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit – the three persons in one Godhead. We believe in God, who is not a one-person God, but a community of three persons, equal in power and majesty, distinct in person but indivisible in essence.

Today’s readings guide us to reflect on the blessed Trinity as the God of love and mercy. They tell us about the affectionate love of God.

In the book of Exodus, God introduced Himself as “The Lord, a God of tenderness and compassion, slow to anger and rich in kindness and faithfulness.” In the Holy gospel, Jesus told Nicodemus that God’s love was the reason He was sent into the world for the salvation of humanity. God is not a stone-hearted being but gentle, loving, and compassionate. That is how He has always been towards us throughout history, and He wants us to continue relating with Him in prayer in the same manner. He cares about us, even when we are sinners (Romans 5:8).

In the “blueprint” of all His creatures is the love existing in the unity of the Godhead. For us, the nature of God as love is reflected in his affection for man – God who wouldn’t want man after he had gone astray to be lost and separated from Him, sent His only Son (John 3:16) so that we might be brought back into the fold of our heavenly family and be saved when we accept and believe in Him. Without love, there cannot be unity or salvation. We learn from our God of love that when you love someone, you are willing to go the extra mile and ready to give freely to the point of self-sacrifice.

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with us all. Amen.
