Today is the Sunday of light and salt. We are called to demonstrate the light in our souls and the saltiness, sweetness, and love in our hearts.

In the first reading, the word of God instructs us to live a generous, loving, and caring life because by so doing, our light will shine forth before the people.

The responsorial psalm tells us that such a good person is light unto the upright and pleasing to God.

St Paul, writing to the Corinthians, reminded them that his teaching is not a fantastical learning like some fanciful and logical words used in philosophy, but a demonstration (an expression) of the power of the Spirit. His teaching is aimed at showing them, through his knowledge of Jesus, our dependence on the power of God.

In the gospel reading, Jesus reminded His disciples that they were the salt of the earth and the light of the world. But if they lose their saltiness or hide their light from shining on others, they become worthless.

How can one be light if no one is experiencing their sheen or salt if they leave the community to taste insipid?

What makes us Christians the followers of Christ is that we can help those in darkness to see the light of God through the assistance we give them. Though the Christian life has its intrapersonal dimension, it is also a shared life; it is a communal life. The communal dimension subsists on the salt and light identity we carry daily, by which we are known as authentic Christ’s followers (John 13:35).

The Christian life is not about talking the talk but doing the needful.

Every act of kindness and generosity you show each time is like a pinch of salt added and a beam of light cast in a bitter and dark world to make it a better place.
