Many people spend their lives searching for happiness, peace, and fulfillment in possessions, achievements, or relationships, only to discover that something is still missing. Today’s word of God is about the satisfaction of our deepest hunger, which only God can do. So, we are invited to come and be satisfied by God Himself.
In the first reading, the prophet Isaiah extends that beautiful invitation that all who thirst may come to the satisfying water at no cost and have free food and drink. God is inviting His people to receive freely what they cannot buy with money, which includes His love, mercy, and the life He alone can give. If God offers these freely to us, why should anybody look elsewhere at a cost for what is unsatisfying? God calls us today for only He can fill our hearts’ emptiness.
In the second reading, St. Paul’s words should be our reaffirmation of faith in God who invites us to be satisfied by Him. He asked, “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ?” He mentioned tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, danger, and even death, but concluded with a triumphant answer: “in all these things we are more than conquerors”; nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. Nothing will separate us from God who alone can satisfy our deepest longing.
In the Gospel, after hearing of the death of John the Baptist, Jesus withdrew to a lonely place. Yet the crowds followed Him. He could have left them or sent them away at some point during the day, but he was filled with compassion for them. He healed the sick, and when the day was ending, He fed more than five thousand people with just five loaves and two fish. The crowds sought him sincerely to fill their emptiness and found Jesus, who gave them both physical and spiritual satisfaction.
As Jesus used the little food the disciples had to multiply for all, He knows all our hearts and our little sacrifices for our good and for others, and how we approach Him with trust, placing everything in His hands to make them better. May He help us and all who seek Him to find lasting satisfaction for our hunger and the needs of our world today.
